On 7th May 2025, our Branch voted to support this statement in light of the recent Supreme Court ruling:
In light of the recent Supreme Court ruling on the definition of women in the Equality Act, we know that many of our trans, nonbinary, intersex and other members of the LGBTQ+ community are concerned and distressed. As with the UCU head office, the BSU UCU branch reaffirms our commitment to equality and inclusion; we oppose discrimination, prejudice, and harassment in any form; and we proudly and actively support trans rights.
We believe the Supreme Court ruling and subsequent EHRC interim guidance is unscientific, unworkable, and a direct violation of basic human rights. We affirm the rights of all trans, intersex, nonbinary, and other gender nonconforming individuals to live with dignity and have their identity respected. We will work to ensure trans+ staff are able to work in an inclusive environment, free from discrimination and harm, and we will continue to advocate for inclusive policies and practices in our workplace.
If you would like to get involved in promoting trans rights in our union and broader university community, please look to our upcoming guidance on advocating for trans rights on our UCU homepage and/or BSU Sharepoint page and be sure to attend membership meetings to receive updates and ensure your voice is heard.
In Solidarity
